About Honens

Headquartered in Calgary, Honens is Canada’s only international piano competition. The triennial event, considered one of the most prestigious of its kind in the world, awards its Prize Laureate $100,000 CAD as well as a three-year comprehensive Artist Development Program which, through opportunities for professional growth and global exposure, helps to navigate the rigours and realities of establishing a performance career in classical music. The annual Honens Festival features a balance of ticketed and free community-based concerts and events which highlight an impressive roster of local, national, and international artists and is programmed to engage audiences of all ages, orientations, backgrounds, and levels of musical sophistication.

The coordinator, volunteers & box office is a professional individual who has box office and sales knowledge as well as strong interpersonal and communication skills. Primary duties include box office management, coordination of volunteers, reception, and general office administration. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, organizational abilities, and computer expertise in an Apple environment is required. Knowledge of the arts, especially music, and the not-for-profit sector will be considered an asset. This role is a full-time, six-month contract—an ideal stepping-stone for those looking to build a career in the cultural sector. The coordinator, volunteers & box office reports to the director, audience & donor engagement.

Responsibilities

Box Office:

  • Coordinates box office for the 2022 Honens Festival and the 2022 Honens International piano competition.
  • Coordinates merchandise sales and distribution.
  • Provides excellent customer service to ensure utmost patron experience as the public’s first point of contact.
  • Monitors and updates all box office and ticketing related information within Spektrix (Honens’ CRM) with support from the director, marketing & communications.
  • Maintains inventory, office supplies, and equipment.
  • Enriches partnerships through excellent service and timely communication.
  • Works closely with all members of the Honens team, supporting each member where necessary.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Marketing & Communications:

  • Maintains inventory, office supplies, and equipment.

Volunteers:

  • Executes annual plan for volunteer requirements.
  • Coordinates and leads the Honens volunteer force of approximately 100 volunteers, with assistance from a team of three volunteer co-chairs.
  • Directs the work of the volunteer co-chairs and specific committee chair(s).
  • Maintains good relationships with volunteers ensuring they are assigned, nurtured, and rewarded appropriately.
  • Champions the use of the Better Impact software, including encouraging and assisting volunteers who need help.
  • Solicits new volunteers, with assistance from volunteer co-chairs.
  • Runs volunteer orientation and training sessions.

Qualifications:

  • A university degree, college diploma, or equivalent experience.
  • Basic understanding of event ticketing, experience with ticketing CRMs considered an asset.
  • Proficient in most Microsoft products in an Apple environment.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously and take initiative.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in volunteer management.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication (verbal / written) skills.
  • Technology savvy with strong computer skills.
  • Knowledge and interest in the performing arts and / or classical music considered an asset.
  • Experience with Better Impact considered an asset.
  • History of volunteering considered an asset.
  • Team-oriented in nature, prioritizes team success over personal success.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours which will include evenings, weekends, and holidays during the 2022 Honens Festival and 2022 Honens International Piano Competition.
