Exposure Studio is an online program that offers Calgary-based photographers an opportunity to develop their practice through a series of discussion-based events. Participating local photographic artists will be invited to become part of an arts collective that Exposure will continue to support.

Exposure Studio will provide opportunities for participants to engage with some of photography’s top professionals from around the world including:

  • Pat Kane, photographer
  • Michael Foley, owner, Foley Gallery, writer & education
  • Tiffany Jones, publisher, Overlapse Books
  • Tailyr Irvine, co-founder of IndigenousPhoto & documentary photographer
  • Etinosa Yvonne, documentary photographer & visual artist
  • Taylor Poitras, Calgary Arts Development specialist in individuals & collectives programs
  • Dr Yan Wang Preston, photographic artist
  • Mary Virginia Swanson, advisor, educator & author

Please note that there are two additional sessions to be confirmed.

Discussion topics might include: how to financially support your practice, how to gain exhibition opportunities, how to edit a portfolio, how to create a website, how to write an artist statement, how to sequence images for publication, how to print your own photo book, how to approach magazines and newspapers for assignment work, or how to use social media effectively as an artist. Conversations may include: using photography as a tool for social change, engaging with communities in a meaningful way through art, using photography to express personal narratives and identities, and how a photographer’s identity and social position shapes the stories they are able to tell.

The Exposure Studio program promotes social cohesion through art and encourages community, connection and collaboration. Studio alumni will be encouraged to continue the conversation and to support one another on their creative journeys, with support from Exposure.
