Festival Manager

The festival manager is a paid, contract-term position that will work closely with schools, teachers and community partners to plan, implement and oversee the production and logistical aspects, including sourcing and coordinating key partners and the required resources needed for the successful execution of the inaugural Arts Education Festival and Summit. You are also tasked with coordinating Festival teaching artists, Summit presenters, stakeholders and participants, collaborating with other key departments within the organization to achieve objectives.

Contract Wage Range: $28 – $35
Hours: Hours vary per week/total 584 hours total
Term: February 13, 2023 – June 9, 2023
Benefit: A monthly cellphone stipend of $50
Location: Calgary: primarily in-person with limited work from home, and some off-site locations as required (e.g. meetings/ events)

The Opportunity

Reporting to the associate director of education, the festival manager is a contract position focused on support and management of the inaugural Arts Education Festival and Summit. The main focus of this role is to support the Festival and Summit through exceptional organization, communication, supervision and execution of Festival and Summit needs.

You are passionate about youth and arts programming. You believe that the arts play an essential role in learning, personal development, and building strong, vibrant communities. You believe in advocating and amplifying the needs of youth and their personal development through the arts. You have a broad interest in art forms from different genres, styles, artistic and technical practices.

In applying your passion for amplifying ongoing education in the realm of arts, you are eager to create opportunities relating to the learning and development of youths using arts as the foundation. This role will collaborate with the associate director, education, to understand key priorities and goals of the Arts Education Festival and Summit.

The festival manager will work closely with schools, teachers and community partners to plan, implement, and oversee the production and logistical aspects, including sourcing and coordinating key partners and the required resources needed for the successful execution of the Festival and Summit. This role will also support with coordinating Festival teaching artists, Summit presenters, stakeholders and participants, and collaborate with other key departments to achieve objectives. Responsibilities also include organizing and overseeing the preparation of and event set-up, as well as maintaining event registration.

Additional Arts Education Festival and Summit responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Assist in the co-ordination of the teaching artist kickoff event.
  • Coordinate information and assets as requested for reporting and marketing needs.
  • Maintain up-to-date master and individual schedules for the Arts Education Festival.
  • Communications with and contracting of Teaching Artists for the Arts Education Festival.
  • Organize and co-ordinate the smooth execution of a series of arts education workshops across the city with schools and community partners.

To succeed in this role

You bring:

  • Experience in arts facilitation
  • Stage management or production management skills
  • Experience working with equity-seeking communities

Must haves:

  • A positive and respectful attitude that fosters collaboration, creative thinking and problem solving.
  • Ability to work from home when required, including the use of a personal computer, reliable internet access, etc.
  • Knowledgeable and able to work confidently and independently in Microsoft Office suite / Office 365, a strong understanding of excel is a must.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects/tasks and meet deadlines.
  • A creative practice/understanding in theatre, music, visual arts, dance or playwriting.
  • Experience in organizing multiple classes and registrations.
  • Excited by the creative process and how it relates to learning and development of youth.
  • Enjoys creating magical experiences for youth and communities using the arts as the foundation.
  • Comfortable using a phone to record video or capture images for use on social media.
  • Class-5 driver’s licence and comfort driving moderately sized vans and/or trucks.
  • Ability to lift at least 35 lbs and navigate uneven terrain (e.g. unloading of supplies to outdoor/indoor locations).
  • Valid Police & Vulnerable Check.
  • Experience in arts facilitation.
  • Stage management or production management skills.
  • Experience working with equity-seeking communities.
