Beakerhead is recruiting teams, team leaders, and experts for the Beakerhead 2022 Hack the House challenge!
The Challenge
Hack the House is seeking teams ages 14–21 across Alberta to put their engineering, creativity and collaborative skills to the test by hacking a piece of used household furniture.
Teams will be featured in Beakerhead programming on September 23, 2022 at a special free all-ages Spark after Dark event, where the amazing house-hacks will be scored by Beakerhead’s Creative Council on the categories outlined below. Teams’ house-hacks will also be integrated into Beakerhead programming taking place at Century Gardens on September 24 and 25, 2022 including a special meet & greet with the Mayor of Calgary, Jyoti Gondek.
The House-Hacks
- House-Hack machines are designed using a recycled piece of household furniture (couch, chair, bed, etc.).
- Machine must be large enough to be piloted, but no bigger than a twin sized bed.
- *Each team will be provided a stipend of $1,000 to purchase materials for the execution of their design.*
- Machines must have a human pilot wearing a government-approved safety helmet and wrist guards.
- Machines must be powered sustainably! Human or renewable power is accepted. Combustion and/or fuel-powered engines are not allowed.
- Machines must be designed, constructed and piloted by registered team members only.
Roles
- Teams must consist of at least two (2) and no more than four (4) youth between the ages of 14–21.
- Beakerhead’s Hack Hero provides administrative coordination between all teams, leaders and Beakerhead production, marketing and operations.
- Each team will have an adult (18+) Team Leader who is responsible to ensure team members are supported in the development and execution of their machine collaboratively.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring team is on track to meet project milestones while providing ongoing mentorship.
- Financial management and reporting as provided in the program policies and procedures.
- Provide weekly sneak peaks to Beakerhead for project plan updates and social media posts.
- Facilitate communications in person, online (Discord) and meetings between team members, experts and Beakerhead.
- Obtaining a vulnerable sector clearance from Calgary Police Service.
All Teams will be provided additional support by the expert panel throughout the duration of the program.
Responsibilities include:
- Meet with teams and their leader online every two weeks to assist teams with any technical or creative aspects within their field of expertise.
- Engage online (Discord) with Teams specific to their area of expertise and to encourage teamwork and mentorship.
