The Children’s Cottage Society proudly provides services to families in Mohkinsstsis, also known as Calgary. We acknowledge Treaty 7 territory and the traditional lands of the Blackfoot Confederacy, which includes the Kainai, Siksika, and Piikani First Nations. We acknowledge the traditional lands of the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda, including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations. We would also like to recognize the Métis people, and the Inuit people who have made their home here in Mohkinsstsis.

The Children’s Cottage Society is dedicated to building strong, healthy, children and safe, nurturing families, through prevention programs and support services. We work with families to increase protective factors and decrease risk factors as a strategy to promote child development, effective and nurturing parenting, and to support and strengthen family functioning. These efforts keep our promise to children, “to help your parents keep you safe so that you can grow up to be healthy and happy.”

Project Brief

The Children’s Cottage is inviting local Indigenous artists to submit proposals to create original artwork for the Healing Room at our new Family Centre in the community of Montgomery. We are specifically seeking an artist to paint a mural on the wall(s) of the above-mentioned healing room.

The room is 15’4” x 15’10” and 8’9” high. There is a curve on one wall. The mural does not need to be on all the walls.

The commissioned artist will be responsible for developing content and creating designs that incorporate some, or all, of the following themes:

  • The seven sacred teachings
  • A group of Tipis that might suggest being at a Pow Wow or Sundance
  • Community and connection
  • Nature
Eligibility

Applicants for this opportunity must meet the following criteria:

  • Individuals must be Indigenous
  • Should ideally live in the Calgary area (travel costs are not paid)
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • May be an artist or an artist team
Considerations for the Artwork

This room will be used for cultural and ceremonial activities. It will be used by parents and children, Elders, staff, volunteers, and community members.

Fabrication: The artist will be responsible for creating and submitting digital files or drawings of their art designs. The artist will be responsible for the creation and painting of the designs in the spaces. All materials and supplies should be included in the project budget.

Artists should be aware that the artwork is subject to damage by the normal wear and tear of a room in use for the public. In the event of damage, the Cottage would make every effort to reengage the artist under a separate contract to correct damage or recreate areas.

Artwork must not contain content in breach of any intellectual property, trademarks, or brands.

Budget

The commissioned artist will receive a set amount CDN.

Budget: $8,000

Supplies and installation costs are included in this fee. $4,000.00 will be paid upon being awarded the contract and $4,000.00 on completion.

Selection Process

Proposals will be reviewed by a committee that will include the voices of Elders, staff and the families served at the Children’s Cottage. They will base their selection on the following criteria:
