Ironic Dancing (is) the same as Dancing

The deadline for this opportunity has passed.

Initiated by Slow Motion Radical/Kara Bullock
Led by the group (you)

All ages and abilities encouraged to take the time and space for communal movement, sharing and creative play.

We believe dance is for everyone. Whether it is in your kitchen, in the grass with your kids, in a class, whether you have attended a post-secondary institution, you do this for money, you dance as a ceremony, you dance for protest, you dance to honour, you dance to celebrate, you dance to feel, you dance to purge, you dance to process, you dance to meditate, you dance to pray, you dance to challenge, you dance for strength. No matter where or why we dance, we will move in and out of our comfort zones together.

This is an online event. You will need to register to receive the invitation, which will be sent out 24 hours before the event. Please communicate any needs you may have to feel welcome and fulfilled.

Dates: Mondays, July 13, 20, and 27, 2020, 4:00 – 6:00pm

Pay what you can, sliding scale, $0 to 25. We strongly suggest that those who have the privilege and resources to do so consider paying more. These funds will be redistributed to cover the share of those to whom funds are a barrier.

For more information or to register, visit eventbrite.caeventbrite.ca.

What to Expect

We will arrive. We will check-in and introduce. We will set intentions. Proposals for exercises and games will be made. There will be discussion. The movement will be of an improvisational, playful, mindful and meditative nature. Everyone will participate as they wish. We will hold space for all. We will notice, listen and watch. We will share our experiences. We will close.

  • Connect through the screen
  • Move together
  • Teach each other
  • Deeply listen
  • Let go of perfectionism

Detailed descriptions of each session will be emailed out to registered participants.

More on Why

There are many kinds of movement…

  • Physical movement
  • Spiritual movement

  • Movement is embedded in who we are.
  • Choreography is everywhere.
  • Performance is any action.
  • Observance is an art.
  • To be in your body is a radical act.

Things to Consider Together

This is safe and brave space to move and voice and listen.

Slow Motion Radical is learning and growing. It is our intention to approach this experience from an anti-racist, anti-ableist, decolonial, and feminist lens. We ask that you hold us accountable to this statement and call us in to harmful actions and attitudes.

Slow Motion Radical/Kara Bullock is based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary) on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.

During our practice, we will ask participants to share their name, gender pronouns, description of themselves, what they are wearing, where they are based or located, race or ethnocultural background. We will be mindful of sharing the space and holding space for others. We will embrace quiet and silence. We will take care of ourselves and participate as we feel in the moment.
