We acknowledge the land on which we gather, Moh’kinsstis, is the ancestral territory of the Siksikaitsitapi — the Blackfoot people — comprising the Siksika, Kainai and Piikani Nations, as well as Treaty 7 signatories, the Tsuut’ina Nation, and the Îyâxe Nakoda Bearspaw, Chiniki and Wesley First Nations. This land is also the home of Métis Nation Region 3.We acknowledge that there has been art, music, dance, storytelling, and ceremony on this land since time immemorial and it is in the spirit of this land and its people that we do our work.

Position: Board Director

As one of Calgary’s leading arts and culture organizations, the Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) has culturally enriched the lives of Calgarians for over 20 years by bringing internationally recognized, world-class cinema to our screens. Occurring each fall in theatres across Downtown Calgary, CIFF is an unforgettable 11-day showcase of up to 200 multi-genre films, hosting industry events, red carpets, screenings, award ceremonies and special presentations.

CIFF also aims to foster the future of Canadian filmmaking. We facilitate learning and networking through our growing Industry Week programming, reward rising talent with funding and educational opportunities, embolden young cinephiles through our Generation Next program and ultimately platform our province’s most brilliant creatives.

Responsibilities of the Board:

  • Ensure the organization’s activities align with its established vision, mission and values, and review those from time to time.
  • Engage in strategic planning and the setting of annual goals and priorities.
  • Provide support and high-level oversight to the executive director.
  • Specific duties of directors.
  • Prepare for, attend and participate in approximately six board meetings per year, the annual Board retreat and regular committee meetings as assigned.
  • Participate in at least one standing committee of the board (Finance, Governance & HR, Strategic Oversight, External Stakeholders) or additional ad hoc committees that may be struck from time to time.
  • Act as an ambassador for CIFF in the community.
  • Regularly attend the festival and its year-round events.
  • Make an annual donation in a personally meaningful amount and within individual means.
  • Leverage relationships in the community to help grow the festival’s philanthropic supporters.

Term of Office

Directors serve for a term of three years and can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms, subject to the society’s bylaws.

Qualifications

The CIFF Board members have a diverse array of professional skills and experience and we encourage all who feel they can contribute to the effectiveness of the organization to apply. Previous experience with boards, not-for-profit organizations or festivals is also a plus.
