Main Space Call For Submissions

Deadline to apply: June 15, 2022

The New Gallery (TNG) is currently welcoming submissions for all programming from 2023 to 2024. TNG is an artist-run centre located in Mohkínstsis (also known as Calgary) Chinatown on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations), and the Tsuut’ina First Nation. Mohkínstsis is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III.

TNG’s Main Space call accepts proposals for solo, collaborative, and group exhibitions, curatorial projects. We also consider relevant applicants for internally organized group shows or other relevant projects. The Main Space call is also open to other types of artistic programming, including but not limited to residencies, community engagement initiatives, and publication projects. Proposals of this nature must follow the regular submissions guidelines, as well as provide a project budget outlining any additional financial resources required beyond the typical budget outlined in this call. When considering applying, please note that TNG is mandated to provide opportunities and venues for artists that foster social and political creative practices, while engaging and educating audiences through artist-run culture and contemporary art. Relevance to this mandate is a primary consideration for the peer jury during the adjudication process.

Main Space programming typically ranges from four to six weeks in duration. The Main Space gallery and washroom are barrier-free, and the single-stall washroom is all-gender. A detailed floor plan for the Main Space can be found on TNG’s website.

Exhibiting artists are offered a fee commensurate with CARFAC’s Fee Schedule under section A.1.1. These rates are updated annually, with 2022 fees projected to be $2,161 CAD for a solo exhibition. Curatorial projects include an additional fee of $1,000 CAD to supplement CARFAC rates. TNG also provides accommodations during installation and a budget to support shipping and travel costs. Details of this budget are determined on a case-by-case basis, but typically cover 90-100 per cent of these costs for solo projects within North America.
