Calgary Pride is a not-for-profit organization that has been serving Calgary since 1990. It remains a vital part of the local gender and sexually diverse community, positioning Calgary as a 2SLGBTQ+ destination for both national and international visitors. Our mandate is to advance visibility and inclusion for Calgary’s gender and sexually diverse communities. To do this, we endeavour to build strong community partnerships, implement ongoing programs like Reading with Royalty (drag storytime program for kiddos in partnership with the Calgary Public Library), Queerly Festive (a free holiday dinner & show), and produce Calgary’s premier celebration of diversity, Calgary Pride Week, Parade & Festival.

As the role is supported by the CHRC’s Student Work Placement Program, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Registered as a student in a recognized Canadian PSE institution in any program or field of study.
  • Legally allowed to work in Canada according to the laws and regulations of the province or territory where they work.
  • Either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person granted refugee protection under the law.

Accessibility

Interviews will be conducted remotely over Google Meet. If a different interview format is more accessible for you, please indicate this in your application. Calgary Pride staff are working remotely and in-person work is anticipated to begin in June 2022.

When we are able to resume in-person work, some things to note about our office space:

  • Our office is in the Calgary neighborhood of East Village and is accessible via public transit.
  • Office is on ground level, wheelchair accessible.
  • Gender-inclusive public washrooms on site.

  • Calgary Pride’s primary working language is English.
  • Our regular working days are Monday to Friday with core hours being 9:00am to 5:00pm.
  • Our team works on a flexible schedule, and May to September is the peak season for Calgary Pride Week, Parade & Festival. Particularly during Calgary Pride Week (August 26 to September 5, 2022), staff, volunteers, and board members typically work more hours, and longer days.

Role

Calgary Pride is seeking a motivated and dynamic post-secondary student to fill a seasonal employment role. Reporting to the manager of production & programming, the production & media coordinator is primarily responsible for overseeing all aspects of technical direction regarding lighting, sound, and equipment, for pre-recorded video content and live streams. The production & media coordinator works closely with the manager of production & programming to draft concepts, determine necessary technical equipment, and execute production on-set. Additionally, the coordinator communicates with the manager of production & programming and informs them of the current budget status and expected expenditures.

Responsibilities

The employee would be required to engage in the below responsibilities in a manner that reflects the organization’s core values and is in line with Calgary Pride’s marketing plan:

  • Maintain a reliable system for providing technical support for all programs and events.
  • Monitor audio as well as video recordings throughout productions.
  • Oversee proper lighting as predetermined in team production meetings.
  • Ensure all productions are distraction-free and technically well-supported by various support roles.
  • Operate live-stream studio software, cameras, and other equipment.
  • Edit footage post-production, according to project frameworks.
  • Update and maintain all production technologies, ensuring proper maintenance and installation.
  • Assess project risks and issues; provide solutions where applicable.
  • Support coordinating all major logistical requirements, production elements, and infrastructure for the Calgary Pride Festival including critical paths, production schedules, and show flows, risk management, accessibility, and environmental plans.
  • Supporting the manager of production & programming in creating and supporting the digital, in-person, or hybrid festival production.
  • Specific focus will be given to managing and executing logistical elements for the festival and podcast, in collaboration with the manager of production & programming.
  • Logistical support of entertainment including show flow development, artist communications, technical rider advancement, audio/visual coordination, scenic/staging development (drapery, backdrops, etc.).
  • Working collaboratively with the social media & marketing coordinator, and marketing agencies in distributing content supporting the Calgary Pride annual festival and the Pride Cast.

Flexible Work Agreement

The nature of this position may require an increased workload at specific times throughout the year, as well as the ability to work evenings and weekends. Calgary Pride will provide you with paid time off in lieu of overtime hours worked. An agreement will be placed in the letter of offer.

You are entitled to take statutory holidays as paid days off, as indicated by the Government of Alberta. In the event that a statutory holiday falls on the weekend, you are entitled to take a day off in lieu as soon as possible after the statutory holiday.

Qualifications

Please clearly demonstrate in your application how you meet the following qualifications:

  • Film production, and video editing experience considered an asset.
  • Extremely comfortable working with and learning new software.
  • Comfort working with streaming platforms and applicable digital studio software (YouTube, Facebook Live, StreamYard, etc.) considered an asset.
  • Comfort working with Adobe Creative Suite programs considered an asset.
  • Possess interpersonal skills required when working with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels within the organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Flexible schedule and ability to set hours as needed.
  • Possess a passion for the community, and demonstrate an understanding of current challenges and opportunities within gender and sexually diverse communities.

Terms of Employment

This position will be on a temporary full-time position at an average of 37.5 hours/week, and will be allowed some flexibility in work schedule, in consultation with the managers. In addition, the workload will be variable due to Calgary Pride programming and special initiatives. The successful candidate is expected to manage their time accordingly and take overtime hours as time in lieu at the earliest available opportunity.
