Meet the Artist

Chinatown Public Art

This summer, Calgary Arts Development and  The City of Calgary will be installing three public artworks in Chinatown.

Comprised of three wall-mounted panels, two at Pho City (207 1st St. SE) and one at the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (138 4th Ave. SE), each represents a fusion of animals important to both cultures: A Chinese dragon with the head of a bison, a phoenix with the head of a golden eagle, and a lion and bear with their cub, which combines traits of both animals.

This project represents a history of collaboration and shared adversity between local Chinese and Indigenous communities. The artworks were illustrated by artist Jarett Sitter following consultation with members of the Chinatown community and Elders from the Stoney Nakoda and Siksika Nations.
