Phase Two Engagement
About the Project
There is a lack of public art in northeast Calgary compared to other quadrants. The northeast public art initiative will bring several public art projects to Calgary’s northeast communities, support local artists, enhance northeast neighbourhoods and reflect the people who live in the communities where art will be located.
In 2021 we asked for your ideas on what kind of public art should be created, where it should be located and what stories the public art should tell. Your thoughtful contributions helped us to build the overall project plan and issue artist calls.
We’ve now hired artists for three exciting projects, and we are again seeking your input on what you’d like to see the artists create. What you tell us in this phase of engagement will help inform the artists’ concepts.

Meet the Artists!

Meet the artists, have a conversation and provide feedback on the creation of three public art pieces in NE Calgary.
This event is being held at the Village Square Leisure Centre (2623 – 56 St. NE).
Phase 2 Project Summary
This project will build three spaces for people to come together and provide opportunities for artists to create pieces in the form of bike racks, benches, picnic tables, mini-galleries, banners, sculptures and community events.
A documentary will also be produced that will feature artists hired, community members, Indigenous Elders and Elders from culturally diverse groups in northeast communities.
In December 2021 we accepted artist applications for the first three functional art projects in this initiative. Submissions were reviewed by a public art selection panel made up community representatives, arts professionals with ties to the northeast, and two Indigenous Elders.
The Northeast Public Art project will be documented by Samuel Obadero, the first artist hired under the program. He will be documenting the artists, their artwork, community involvement, and the locations in northeast Calgary where the artwork will be placed.
