Educational Opportunities September 26, 2023 Origami Workshop With Miya Turnbull Join artist Miya Turnbull, exhibiting in Like everything alive that we try to hold forever, for an unusual Origami workshop where we will fold several different designs, including a frog and butterfly, using paper printed with the artist’s face. Combining traditional designs and self-portraiture, Turnbull uses this approach in her work in conjunction with her mask-making practice. No prior Origami folding experience needed. Participants can keep their folded creations to take home. Miya Turnbull is a multi-disciplinary visual artist of mixed Japanese-Canadian ancestry. She grew up on a farm near Onoway, Alberta, and graduated from the University of Lethbridge with a BFA. She has been based in Kjipuktuk (Halifax) for the past twenty years. She works with many different mediums, but is primarily a mask artist, and new to her practice is performance. She focuses on self-portraits, using her photo-mask technique to make life-like variations and representations of her face, often distorting and manipulating her image as a way to explore identity.
