Who Are We?
Calgary Arts Development supports and strengthens the arts to benefit all Calgarians. We invest in artists and arts organizations with funds provided by The City of Calgary. Our programs support hundreds of arts organizations, individual artists, artist collectives, and ad hoc groups in Calgary.
We recognize that our current granting structure favours western European artistic expression and is rooted in colonial systems. However, we firmly believe that through the arts we can contribute to right relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
In our efforts to develop relationships with Indigenous communities and artists we have the great fortune to be developing a grant program that is intentionally inclusive of Indigenous teachings and values. We are calling this program the Original Peoples Investment Program (OPIP).
OPIP is being designed by and with Indigenous artists from the Treaty 7 region and Métis Nation of Alberta Region 3 to ensure it is rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing and learning.
OPIP will support the creation, preservation and revitalization of First Nation/Métis/Inuit (FNMI) art through arts-based projects and activities that are supported and validated by FNMI artists, community, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers.
Who Are You?
Calgary Arts Development seeks an FNMI consultant to run the first iteration of OPIP and to further deepen and develop Calgary Arts Development’s relationships with the FNMI peoples who call Treaty 7 home. If you identify as FNMI and share the following key values then we would like to meet you!
- You care about and are sensitive to what it takes to make people feel safe, heard and validated.
- You have a deep curiosity for all of the many different ways we make and share art, and want to understand how best to support that.
- You have a passion for building community.
- You are from the FNMI nations that are part of Treaty 7 or Métis Region 3.
A first draft of the guidelines for OPIP was drafted in collaboration with an Indigenous Artist Advisory and feedback from a Community Circle hosted in August 2018. Building off of this work, you will work in partnership with Calgary Arts Development to:
- You care about and are sensitive to what it takes to make people feel safe, heard and validated. Develop authentic relationships with FNMI communities living in Calgary and its surrounding areas.
- Incorporate Indigenous teachings, values, and ways of knowing into the delivery of all aspects of OPIP.
- Support artists, art-makers, arts groups, and arts organizations to participate in OPIP, as applicants and as part of the grant selection community circle.
The OPIP Consultant is a full-time position reporting to the Community Investment Manager, responsible for running the application, grant selection and grant notification processes, which are currently scheduled to happen before the end of March 2019.
Since this program is still evolving, there is a possibility that this timeline might be extended. The OPIP Consultant will also identify and inform possible applicants about the program throughout the Treaty 7 area.
Experience in applying for or jurying grants is not a prerequisite for this position. The OPIP Consultant will have the support of the Community Investment, Impact and Communication teams.
This is a full-time position for a term of one-year with the possibility of extension. The annual salary range will be $43,000 to $50,000 with a benefits package.
