Who We Are

The Alberta Society of Artists is a registered society under the regulations of the Province of Alberta. Its members include professional artists in all visual art media as well as visual arts supporters. The ASA helps to foster and promote the visual arts in Alberta and contributes to the well-being of the artistic community. The active membership of professional visual artists strives for excellence and through exhibition, education and communication, increases public awareness and public appreciation for the arts.

The Society is a Canadian registered charitable organization that provides enhanced support for existing programs and develops new ones through its own resources and initiatives as well as through the dedicated efforts of its volunteers.

Job Description

Under supervision of the president, the program coordinator is primarily responsible for facilitating activities directly related to ASA public programming throughout Alberta. This includes maintaining communications with government, arts organizations, galleries and other institutions, responding to inquiries from ASA members, participating artists and the public, and ensuring that the ASA Gallery is open to the public from Wednesday to Saturday, between 10am and 4pm.

Responsibilities:

Directs, implements, executes and maintains the ASA’s program delivery specific to art education. Every year, the Society provides scholarships to post-secondary and graduate visual arts students and exhibition opportunities, presentations and events throughout Alberta in venues that are free to the public.

Presentations & Exhibitions

Facilitates all public exhibition programming by:

  • Preparing notices and submission documents as required for “Calls to Artists” and/or “Calls to Students.”
  • Administering ongoing submission processes which includes: Preparing submissions for Blind Jury adjudication, facilitating the ASA jury process by contacting jurors, receiving jury adjudications, tabulating results, and advising artists of acceptance or non-acceptance of work.
  • Accepting artwork deliveries and ensuring proper packaging.
  • Tracking statistics as required for grants, insurance, etc.
  • Coordinates and manages presentation of art exhibitions at diverse locations within the province, ensuring seamless facilitation and implementation.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Preparing all materials for each venue.
  • Coordinating exhibition schedules.
  • Arranging transportation of artwork.
  • Scheduling installation and striking of artwork.
  • Arranging contracts for presenters (exhibitors, speakers, workshops).
  • Facilitating any specialized presentation requirements such as audio-visual equipment.
  • Coordinating participating artists and other exhibition volunteer activities.

Marketing and Communications for Public Programming

  • Designs promotional material for each Presentation and Exhibition for digital distribution.
  • Designs two digital annual exhibition catalogues for the Provincial Travelling Exhibition program and the Scholarships program.
  • Designs and implements advertising campaigns for all exhibitions, presentations, and scholarships.
  • Maintains and refreshes the ASA website, newsletters, and social media platforms in relation to ASA public programming and events.

ASA Gallery and Provincial Office Administration

  • Act as the main point of contact for the ASA provincial office and galleries, providing information and assistance to gallery visitors and stake holders through phone, text, email and in person.
  • Aids in the preparation of grant applications to secure funding for the implementation of ASA programming.
  • Administers the annual membership renewal process.
  • Collaborates with the ASA president and provincial council on special projects as needed.
  • Accountable for providing the bookkeeper with weekly revenue and expenditure transactions data for financial processing.
  • Assists TREX program manager / curator with TREX programming as needed.
Qualifications

The successful applicant should possess a degree in the arts, communication or marketing and project management from an accredited university or college or equivalent and have a history of program delivery preferably with not-for-profit organizations or public art institutions.

The position requires a person who is self-motivated, energetic, articulate, well organized, resourceful, positive and familiar with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, WordPress, and a design program (Canva, InDesign or other). Previous experience working with not-for-profit organizations and volunteer boards considered an asset.
