Program Director

Early Childhood Music Program

Youth Singers of Calgary is seeking a program director for our KIDS & MUSIC program.

This is a part-time, contract-based position for a program director to manage, direct and teach the KIDS & MUSIC Division of the Youth Singers of Calgary (YSC), beginning in January 2023. This program includes four age groups of early childhood education; pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2.

The structure of the first three age groups is based upon a music class format: securing the singing voice, introducing unison and preparatory two-part singing, as well as age-appropriate repertoire, skills and concepts. The Grade 2 level is a preparatory choir experience, including an introduction to the musical score and the building of musical and choreography skills.

The program consists of 12 classes, ranging from 45 to 60 minutes in length.

The team includes a professional choreographer who works with every level, and an accompanist who works with the Grade 2 classes. YSC provides admin support with registrations, marketing, production for performances and communications.

Compensation is based on experience, in the $27,000 to $30,000 range.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience with and passion for music education for young children.
  • A degree in either education, early childhood education, or music.
  • A diploma, or equivalent experience in music pedagogy, or early childhood education.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience with young children (ages 3 to 7) in a classroom setting.
  • Strong classroom management and organization skills.
  • Pedagogical background in the philosophy of Kodaly and/or Orff, and proficient with solfège.
  • Beautiful singer with developed technique and strong sight-reading skills.
  • Keyboarding skills.
  • Clear and timely communication skills.
  • The knowledge and mindset to make every class a fun learning adventure.
