The New Gallery (TNG) is an artist-run centre located in Calgary Chinatown on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations), and the Tsuut’ina First Nation. Mohkínstsis—commonly known as the City of Calgary—is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III.
TNG is currently welcoming submissions for Main Space programming beginning in 2021.
TNG accepts proposals for solo and group exhibitions, curatorial projects, and may also consider individual artists for inclusion in a curated group show. TNG’s Main Space is also interested in supporting projects outside of a traditional exhibition format, including but not limited to residencies, community engagement initiatives, and publication projects.
Proposals of this nature must follow the regular submissions procedures, as well as provide a project budget outlining any additional financial resources required. When considering applying, please note that TNG is mandated to provide opportunities and venues for artists that foster social and political creative practices, while engaging and educating audiences through contemporary art. Relevance to this mandate is a core criteria for the peer jury during their adjudication process.
Main Space exhibitions range from four to six weeks in duration. A detailed floor plan for the Main Space can be found on TNG’s website, visit thenewgallery.org.
Exhibiting artists are currently offered a fee of $2,036 to show their work (commensurate with current CARFAC Fee Schedule – A.1.1, and updated annually upon CARFAC’s new schedule release). Additionally, TNG provides accommodations during installation and financial resources to aid artists in managing shipping and travel costs. Details of this budget are determined on a case-by-case basis, but typically cover 90 to 100% of these costs for artists working within North America.
The following materials should be included in your application:
- Proposal: Briefly describe your exhibition. Provide complete details of your spatial, physical, and material requirements, including any special equipment and/or technical needs.
- Artist Statement: Discuss how your proposed project is situated in relation to your current artistic practice and the broader context of your work, research, and interests. Please remember that congruity with TNG’s mandate is a major consideration during the selection process.
- Support: Please include up to fifteen pieces of additional support material, including digital images, videos, or audio clips alongside a corresponding numbered image list detailing the artwork’s title, medium, physical size, date of completion, and any other necessary descriptors. TNG’s peer jury will review up to a maximum of five minutes of time-based work. TNG accepts links to video and audio work hosted online.
- Curriculum Vitae: Describe your artistic background to a maximum length of three pages. Please include all relevant contact information.

TNG only accepts digital submissions via email. Please format all written materials as a single PDF document. Images must be numbered RGB JPG files with a maximum resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels at 72DPI and no larger than 1MB in size. Emailed applications must be submitted in a single ZIP folder containing both documents and images.

Successful applicants will be notified by the beginning of September 2019. Regrettably, TNG does not contact unsuccessful applicants due to high volumes of submissions. If you have not heard from us by early September and would like to request feedback, please do not hesitate to contact us.
