Vertigo Theatre is seeking a part-time artistic associate to work with the company during our 2019/20 season (September 2019 to June 2020). The chosen candidate will work closely with artistic director Craig Hall in managing the company’s artistic output and in artistic planning.

We are looking for someone connected to Calgary’s emerging and established artistic communities, with some knowledge of the national arts community.

This is an ideal position for an outgoing individual with a background in theatre arts and production, who is looking for an opportunity to combine personal creativity with administrative, research, and communications skills.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Coordinating new play development activities including soliciting pitches, script reading, and producing workshops and readings.
  • Coordinating mentorship and training activities including the creation of postings and contracts.
  • Coordinating general and show-specific auditions.
  • Coordinating company residencies.
  • Assisting the AD in creating a long-term artistic strategy.
  • Participating in season planning as part of the artistic team.
  • Assisting with coordinating and hosting external and internal learning and outreach events as required (talkbacks, pre-show talks, student matinees, behind the scenes events, etc.).
  • Assisting in grant writing.
  • Writing briefs and conducting research.
  • Supporting communications with the board of directors.
  • Providing assistance to the artistic director, including correspondence, schedule management, report preparation, and other administrative duties.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in theatre and performance studies (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience in production dramaturgy, literary management, or play development.
  • Good written and oral communications skills.

  • A passion for live theatre and the performing arts and an understanding of current theatre practices and trends.

Remuneration and Schedule:

  • The chosen candidate will receive a wage of between $20 and $23/hour for a maximum of 650 hours between September 2019 and June 2020.
  • Candidates must be available to start in September 2019 on an exact date to be negotiated.
  • The schedule for this position is flexible within this time frame, to accommodate an artist who may already have existing commitments in the current season.
