Winter 2018 Exhibit

Submissions are now open for The Quenten Doolittle Memorial Gallery Exhibit, What Lies Beneath – A Journey through Historic & Modern Calgary running January 17 to March 9, 2019.

The Pumphouse Theatre is a vibrant facility with historical significance supporting and presenting all art forms; and creating opportunities for engagement, enrichment, cultural experience, learning and inspiration serving all Calgarians. The Quenten Doolittle Memorial Gallery provides accessible wall display space for Calgary and Alberta visual artists to display and sell their work, free from commission.

For this exhibit, we are asking for photographic work that showcases the city of Calgary, either historically or contemporary. Submitted work must reflect the parts of the city which would be considered hidden, under-represented, or forgotten.

Submissions must meet the following requirements:

  • Artist resides in Alberta and must be available for installation.
  • Art must meet the criteria of the theme presented and meet the form of photography.
  • Artwork must be delivered ready to hang on our hanging system (wall-space only).

Installation Requirements

All art must be equipped with picture hanging wire and appropriately placed D ring hangers. Hanging cleats will not be accepted.

To apply, please send the following information via email or mail:

  • Gallery submission form.
  • Artist biography (250 words max).
  • Artwork: Photos, maximum of five, do not send original works.

Timeline: 

  • Submission Deadline: December 7, 2018
  • Installation: January 13 – 15, 2019
  • Gallery Close: March 9, 2019

Fees: No costs

Pumphouse does not take commision or charge fees, artists retain all money from any sales of their pieces.

Selection Process

Art pieces are selected by a committee of no less than 3 people and are a mix of artists and administrators.  Selection criteria are based on suitability to the theme, artist’s technique, elicited an emotional response, creativity & innovation, and suitability for the Pumphouse Theatre art gallery space and its patrons (ages 5-85 representing various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds).
