How applying the fundamentals of fiction and cultural criticism can strengthen your personal essay.

An in-person workshop with Mikka Jacobsen, author of Modern Fables.

In this workshop, Mikka Jacobsen will discuss how the fundamentals of fiction — setting, voice, character, action and dialogue — can be honed into a powerful personal essay. How might a writer use a narrative persona to address broader cultural issues? How does an anecdote — particularly an embarrassing or shameful one — work to perform cultural critique? How closely must a memoirist stick to the “facts,” and what is the difference between fact and truth?
