Adrian Stimson
Adrian Stimson's creative path began with an exploration into what it means to be an artist
A member of the Siksika Nation, Adrian Stimson is an interdisciplinary artist who exhibits nationally and internationally. He is known for his use of black-and-white monochromatic paintings depicting bison in imagined landscapes, while his installation work primarily examines the residential school experience.
His creative journey began in his childhood. “I think I’ve always seen myself as an artist — as a kid, doodling, drawing, and interested in the arts. I decided to take the plunge, and it’s been 23 years now since I’ve sort of been labeled as a professional artist,” he says.
Stimson holds a bachelor of fine arts degree with distinction from AUArts, a masters in fine arts from the University of Saskatchewan, and has won countless awards for his creative work. “I think it’s always been a part of me, but you know it’s interesting… even back then I don’t even think I really understood the idea of a professional artist, as a vocation, as a job. But… it is a profession, it is something that takes a lot of work on a regular basis to maintain and keep up. So once I decided to sort of take that plunge into the world of professional artist I haven’t looked back. I love it. I think for me it is a way of expressing myself visually, performatively, in so many ways.”
