Episode 55: The Walk for Reconciliation
With Charlotte YellowHorn McLeod and Jen Thompson
Our latest Living a Creative Life video celebrates National Indigenous History Month as host Adora Nwofor learns more about some of the ways our city is acknowledging and sharing stories about Indigenous history and culture.
Charlotte YellowHorn McLeod has been creating beautiful walking sticks for the annual Walk for Reconciliation since the first event was held in 2008 to mark Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s official apology to residential school survivors. The sticks serve as a reminder of Indigenous peoples connection to the land and all but three are painted with feathers that have the name of a residential school — those have no name to represent the children who never came home.
The 2024 Walk for Reconciliation takes place on Friday, June 21, 2024 starting at the Harry Hays Building and ending at The Confluence Historic Site and Parkland, previously known as Fort Calgary. The Confluence executive director Jen Thompson says the new name is intended to honour the land and better reflect what the location in Calgary/Mohkinsstsis stands for. As part of the organization’s journey towards Truth and Reconciliation, the goal is also to tell more truthful stories about the site’s history.
