Jacqueline Huskisson
Artist uses narrative to help explore different aspects of art
Jacqueline Huskisson considers herself an interdisciplinary artist whose work is based heavily in narrative. She is one of the artists selected to participate in the 2023 With You With Pride mural installation at Memorial Park, and her work is on display throughout Calgary’s core for 2023–2024 as part of the Centre City Banners public art program. “Since (graduating with an MFA), I’ve been doing a lot of exploring what printmaking is, its potential and how I can integrate it into my paintings, my drawings, but also try to consider how my artwork fits into the realm of narrative and how narrative can be used in alternative forms like public art or beyond.”
Following her recent work on the Centre City Banners project, Huskisson is excited to explore the realm of public art. “I think (public art is) anything that people can engage with or that is readily accessible. I don’t think it has to be there forever, but just something that people can engage in in some way,” she says. “…It’s almost like a gallery that surrounds us. And for me, to have that is so uplifting and we need that to live and not just survive, I think it’s something to look forward to, something to engage with, something to help you think and for it just not just for me, but for everybody.
“I think the world would be pretty bland without public art.”
