Grants specialist shares insight into the Original Peoples Investment Program
Sable Sweetgrass is a member of the Kainai Nation of Southern Alberta, born and raised in Calgary, Mohkinstsis. A short story writer, playwright, and filmmaker, she currently works at Calgary Arts Development as the grants specialist for Indigenous programs.
A new program introduced in 2018, the Original Peoples Investment Program (OPIP) uses a very different process to support the preservation and revitalization of First Nation/Métis/Inuit (FNMI) art. It invests in arts-based projects and activities that are supported and validated by FNMI artists, community, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers.
“OPIP is really designed for the artists of all First Nations, Indigenous people here in the city,” she explains. “But also, we reach out to the Treaty 7 communities as well.”
Tune in to hear more about how OPIP came to be, her role at Calgary Arts Development, and how she works to support FNMI artists in Calgary.
