Meet the Artist: Chinatown Public Art
Meet the artist behind some new public art coming to Calgary’s Chinatown this summer!
The project includes three colourful panels that will be mounted on exterior walls in the community — two at Pho City (207 1st St. SE) and one at the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (138 4th Ave. SE). Each panel represents a whimsical fusion of animals important to both Chinese and Indigenous cultures: a Chinese dragon with the head of a bison; a phoenix with the head of a golden eagle; and a lion and bear with their cub, which combines traits of both animals.
The artworks were illustrated by artist Jarett Sitter following consultation with members of the Chinatown community and Elders from the Stoney Nakoda and Siksika Nations.
