Cecilia Barboza

I’m a Venezuelan-Canadian artist, living in Calgary since 2009. My creative journey is a blend of my rich cultural background and professional expertise in architecture and heritage conservation. Growing up in Venezuela, I was deeply influenced by the interaction of architecture with heritage conservation and the stark social inequities around me. These early experiences have had a lasting impact on my artistic vision and continue to inspire me to reflect these themes in my work.

My artistic practice is all about the transformative magic of mosaic art, with stained glass as my go-to medium. I love crafting intricate, light-infused stories through the dynamic dance of colours, textures and translucence in stained glass. Each mosaic I create is a perfect mix of craftsmanship and vision, bringing lively, vibrant scenes to life with architectural precision from my professional training.

Style-wise, I lean towards realism, drawing inspiration from the every day yet profoundly significant urban landscapes that shape our lives. Through my mosaics, I explore themes of memory, place, and resilience, shining a light on social and cultural narratives that often go unnoticed. By capturing the layered beauty of cities, my work celebrates our collective identity and reflects on the challenges of urban life.
