Honey Sturdy

Honey Alice Sturdy is a professional flamenco dancer born in Gourock, Scotland and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A classically trained ballet dancer for 15 years, Honey was driven to pursue studies in flamenco dance in Southern Spain, after getting a taste of flamenco in her childhood city of Calgary. That marked the beginning of an 23-year journey in the studies and professional development of flamenco dance. The trip to Southern Spain in 2002 landed her in Jerez de la Frontera, the birthplace of flamenco, and later to other areas such as: Seville, Madrid, Caceres, Algeciras and Granada. The latter she studied for five years at the “Escuela Internacional de Flamenco Manolete”. From 2017 until 2018 she turned professional after training at the Juan Polvillo Flamenco Dance Academy in Seville.

At the end of 2018 she returned to Calgary and has been doing non-stop performances in venues in and around Calgary. To name a few: The Cornerstone Café, Without Papers Pizza, The Ship n’ Anchor Pub, The Kingfisher Seafood Restaurant, Varsity Variety Night, The 2020 Latino Comedy Festival (with Mexican singer Paloma Negra), Salt n’ Pepper Bar, Kensington Pub, Swans Pub, The Dandelion Café, The Good Earth Café, Hexters Pub, The Bowness Hotel New Years Eve 2020, The Boulevard Cafe, The King Eddie Blues Bar, Rio Bar n’ Grill, The Eden, and Mikeys on 12th .

In July of 2019, Honey performed at the world-renowned Calgary Stampede as part of the International Dance Showcase. In August she had a lifetime opportunity to perform for five days at the “Edinburgh Fringe Festival” in Scotland. Since August of 2021, Honey has performed at many outdoor festivals such as: The Renfrew Community Association Fundraiser, The Marda Gras Festival, Century Gardens (Calgary Downtown Association), and The Crescent Heights Village Trunk Show. She performed at NVRLND Cafe and Bar in Inglewood, and The Asylum for Art, with bands “The Torchettes” and “La Mosca”. She also had privileged opportunities with the Dance YYC Springboard Performance Showcase at ContainR Park in Kensington (with musician brother Lochinvar Sturdy (LazaBlasta, M5, The Nex’d), dancing to his latest jazz composition released from his album Matamoros Sharps and Flats. In late October, Honey performed three flamenco pieces for the Decidedly Jazz Danceworks YYC Showcase.

Honey looks forward to continuing performing locally and worldwide.
