Kaitlin Roth
I have worked in Calgary as an artist and illustrator for over 10 years now. I went to ACAD from 2010-2013, majoring in print media, where I fell in love with screen printing, intaglio, embossing, and block printing. I now primarily work with ink, acrylic, charcoal, pastel, silkscreen, and digital mediums. I have created album artwork for local musicians, posters for events and venues, private commissions, illustrations for a local brewery, BUMP roadworks project, along with other art and graphic work.
After ACAD, I completed a BA in Psychology at the University of Calgary. Psychology has always been a huge aspect of my artwork. I focus on topics of mental health and existential dread through a comedic lens, creating characters that embody an awkwardness and a dark sense of humour. My work is often illustrative and cartoonish, coming from a wide array of pop culture influences such as Ren and Stimpy, outsider artists and musicians, paired with an intuitive process that taps into the subconscious. Artists that I am influenced by include Trenton Doyle Hancock, Ed Pien, Junji Ito, Ellen Gallagher, Bill Flick, Henry Darger, Brian Chippendale, and Hieronymus Bosch. The subject matter I focus on pertains to the human psyche, surrealism, existentialism, mental health, solitude, humour, flora & fauna, and anatomy.
