Soda Leavey
Soda Leavey is a queer interdisciplinary artist based in Canada and the West Coast. Her work is experiential, process focused and action based. The work explores boundaries between mediums and experimental actions that explore enigmatic emotional relationships with the symbolic self, play with syntax, semantics & challenge the limits of the body, form and space. Navigating ideas of extension and action in the context of labour — how it allows and inhibits practice as a female artist, and how it may bring forth fluid boundaries of the body in contemporary hybrid spaces has made identity play a pivotal role in the work. I came to understand transperspectivism through my early painting practice — the configuration of form and the dissolution of ground began my interest in the cross sections of mediums and gestures. The evolution of action on paper to action in space gave me a new set of tools.
Spacetime. Presence. Experience. In an ever advancing technologically augmented society, the marks we make in time, on paper, in others, is what ties us to our humanity and differentiates us from animals and machines, that is where the art is — that is where my explorations and practice stems from.
