2016 event will showcase youth artists and announce seven legacy artist award winners
(Calgary AB) – Calgary Arts Development and the Office of the Mayor will welcome Calgary’s business and arts communities to the fourth annual Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 in the Palomino Ballroom (BMO Centre, Stampede Park). Calgary Arts Development acknowledges the support of Strategic Group as the Champion Sponsor, TELUS as the Youth Arts Showcase sponsor, and TD Bank Group as the VIP Table Sponsor at this year’s event. The 2016 Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions is officially sold-out.
Featuring remarks from Mayor Naheed Nenshi, the event is hosted by Dave Kelly and focuses on what it takes to create, produce, and present the arts in Calgary, and the many ways that Calgarians of all backgrounds can be arts champions in our city.
“We’re fortunate that Calgary is home to such a vibrant arts community, and that is thanks in large part to the folks who support and promote the industry,” commented Mayor Nenshi. “It’s important for Calgary’s future that we continue to celebrate and cultivate arts champions in our city.”
“Calgarians are arts champions in all sorts of ways,” says Patti Pon, President & CEO of Calgary Arts Development. “It’s great knowing the room will be filled to capacity at this year’s lunch, which is about celebrating current arts champions and expanding the circle of those who are helping to build a creative, connected city for all Calgarians.”
The occasion will also recognize recipients of this year’s Cultural Leaders Legacy Artist Awards. A legacy of Calgary’s year as a Cultural Capital of Canada, each award is funded by a contribution from a local philanthropist or organization with matching money from Calgary 2012. These awards are $5,000 cash prizes that support artists or arts organizations.
The Cultural Leaders Legacy Artist Awards are:
• ATB Financial Healing Through the Arts Award
• Calgary Catholic Immigration Society New Canadian Artist Award
• Colin Jackson and Arlene Strom Creative Placemaking Award
• Enbridge Emerging Artist Award
• MacLachlan Community Beacon Award
• Sandstone City Builder Award
• Doug and Lois Mitchell Outstanding Calgary Artist Award
There will be photo and footage opportunities for media at the event. The Mayor will be available immediately after the lunch for media questions and a photo with the Cultural Leader Legacy Artist Award recipients.
