About the Artist:

Dawn van de Schoot is a performer who has been working in film, television, theatre and voice performance for the past 30 years. She has worked as an actor, director, playwright and screenwriter as well an acting teacher and coach. In 2001 Dawn obtained her MFA in Theatre Studies, specializing in new play creation.

Shannon Smith is the owner/photographer of “Artist Shannon Smith,” specializing in body liberation/positivity and female empowerment through boudoir and portrait imagery. Shannon believes that every woman deserves to be captured on film and to show up in history, to see herself from a new point of view, and to reignite the flames that often go out in our daily life.

The Project

Kitchen Feminism Art Society worked with eight women from diverse backgrounds to collaborate on a series of images and short videos to explore the ways in which women’s societal roles have been “rolled back in time” as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. A series of workshops culminated in two weekends of photoshoots, which were unveiled at an emotional, in-person launch.

The 2021 Community-Run Microgrant

This project was funded as part of the 2021 Community-Run Microgrant. Calgary Arts Development invited proposals for community-initiated public art projects in 2021. Community groups could apply for up to $10,000 from a total funding pool of $100,000, to hire local artists for eligible projects. Funding for this one-time program was provided through the Government of Alberta and The City of Calgary.
