Arts Organizations
The Operating Grant Program provides stable, predictable funding to non-profit arts organizations in Calgary / Mohkinsstsis. Operating Grants are committed on a multi-year cycle, and may be directed to any area of an organization’s overall budget. The Operating Grant in 2023 was confirmed on a two-year cycle for 2023 and 2024.
The program was open to non-profit arts organizations that received operating grants through the Operating Grant Program in the 2020 — 2022 funding cycle. In 2023 organizations in the Operating Grant Program received their ‘base grant’ (the amount confirmed through their previous 2020 — 2022 investment agreement) and were also eligible for a percentage-based increase to their annual operating grant for 2023 and 2024. The total sum of the base grant and the increase is considered the new operating grant amount for both the 2023 and 2024 grant years.
160 organizations received $7,668,127 through the Operating Grant Program in 2023. For information about how this program was assessed, please see the Terms of Reference for the Operating Grant Program.

The Future Focus Program is a joint initiative of Calgary Arts Development, the Rozsa Foundation and the Calgary Foundation aimed at supporting Calgary-based arts organizations to investigate, plan and implement significant strategic adaptations in their operations. The goal of the program was to assist organizations in making strategic changes or decisions about their model, operations or focus that may inform how existing and future programs are developed and delivered. Through this program, organizations access funds to develop strategies and engage expertise to build their capacity and assist them in their journeys to navigate the questions, challenges and opportunities they face.
In the 2023 grant year, the Future Focus Program supported 18 organizations to a total of $253,239. Grants made through the November 2023 intake were paid in the 2024 grant year. For information about how this program was assessed, please see the Guidelines for the Future Focus Program. Due to the sensitive or confidential nature of work completed through this program, grantees will remain anonymous.
In addition to the joint inititiave Future Focus Program, Calgary Arts Development maintains the Organization Structural Change program to address emerging needs related to organizational capacity activities that do not fit within the program goal of the Future Focus Program or occur outside of intake periods. These grants are made by the leadership team at Calgary Arts Development.
In 2023, five (5) organizations received $42,800. Due to the sensitive or confidential nature of work completed through this program, grantees will remain anonymous.
