WinSport Day Lodge Art Request for Proposals (RFP), Art Installation for the New Day Lodge at Canada Olympic Park

Project Overview

WinSport invites professional artists or artist teams to submit proposals for an original, site-specific artwork to be installed in the new Day Lodge at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. This artwork will be a prominent feature of the renovated Day Lodge, a facility that serves over 1.2 million visitors annually and is dedicated to sport, community and sustainability.

Project Goals

The artwork should reflect and celebrate the following themes:

  • Spirit of Sport: The energy, dedication and community fostered through athletic pursuits.
  • Accessibility and Inclusion: Emphasizing barrier-free access and welcoming diversity in all forms.
  • Indigenous Culture: Honouring the heritage, stories and contributions of Indigenous peoples.
  • Olympic Legacy: Reflecting the history and ongoing impact of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and beyond.
  • Sport Throughout Life: Celebrating sport as a lifelong journey, inclusive of all ages and abilities.
  • Scope of Work
  • Design, fabricate and install an original artwork that is durable, safe and suitable for a high-traffic public environment.
  • Artwork may be interior or exterior, integrated thoughtfully within the Day Lodge’s architecture and landscape.
  • Consideration for sustainable materials and environmentally responsible practices is encouraged.
  • Coordination with WinSport and contractors to ensure compliance with installation requirements and timelines.

Proposal Submission Requirements

Artists or artist teams must submit a proposal including the following components:

  • Concept Description and Artist Statement
    • Describe your artistic vision and how the proposed work addresses one or more of the specified themes.
    • Include materials, scale and intended impact on the public and site.
  • Proposed Budget
    • Provide a detailed budget covering artist fees, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation and any other related costs.
  • Project Timeline
    • Outline key milestones from design development through to installation completion, including any critical dependencies.
  • Installation Requirements
    • Detail technical, spatial and logistical needs for installation, including any special equipment or site access considerations.
  • Supporting Documentation
    • Resume or CV for all artists involved, highlighting relevant public art experience.
    • Portfolio images or documentation of previous work, particularly large-scale or site-specific projects.
    • References from previous clients or collaborators.
    • Visual materials such as sketches, renderings or models illustrating the proposed concept.

Evaluation Criteria

Proposals will be assessed based on:

  • Artistic excellence and originality.
  • Relevance and responsiveness to the five themes.
  • Feasibility and clarity of budget and timeline.
  • Experience with public art projects and managing installation logistics.
  • Consideration of sustainability and durability.
  • Contribution to the Day Lodge’s mission and visitor experience.

Completion and Installation: Target by end of 2025, aligned with Day Lodge renovation schedule.

Additional Information

The Day Lodge renovation is supported by federal and provincial funding, emphasizing accessibility, Indigenous inclusion, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. The selected artwork will become a lasting part of this iconic sport and community hub.
