Applications Open: Community-Run Public Art Microgrant Program

Update August 27, 2024: The deadline to apply for this program is extended from September 4, 2024 to September 18, 2024 at 4:30pm MT.

Guidelines have been released and applications are open for this year’s Community-Run Public Art Microgrant Program.

Recognizing that public art opportunities can come from grassroots ideas initiated and led by communities, Calgary Arts Development invites proposals for community-run public art projects. This opportunity is open to community-run organizations, including informal groups that define themselves in terms of distinct communities, neighbourhood associations and non-profit or charitable organizations.

Community-run organizations in Calgary (known as Mohkinsstsis in Blackfoot), can apply for up to $15,000 in funding to hire local artists at any level of experience and create public art in their neighbourhoods. Funding is available for up to 30 projects. Application deadline is September 18, 2024.

If you have any questions or need help completing an application, please contact the public art team at publicart@calgaryartsdevelopment.com.

Online Information Session

The purpose of this session is to provide more information about the Community-Run Public Art Microgrant program and how to apply through our online grant application platform. It will also provide some approaches, examples and questions that might be helpful to consider when determining if you will apply and how best to do so. There will be an open Q&A at the end of the session for participants to ask any questions.

This session takes place virtually over zoom. Once you have registered, you will receive a link to access the Zoom meeting for this session.

An ASL interpreter will be on hand for the duration of the session.

When: Thursday, August 1, 2024 from 1 – 2:30pm. Register here.

We plan to record the presentation portion of the info session and post it on our website afterwards. The video will be available to everyone — you do not have to register for the event to get access to the video. Please note that this may take a few weeks.

Virtual Open Office Space

We are always happy to answer your questions by email or phone, but we know sometimes a meeting is better. If you would like to meet one-on-one with the project lead, register for a 30-minute time blocks below. These meetings are a great opportunity to go over specific questions about the microgrant program, eligibility, the online application platform, or any other concerns that are not in our FAQ.

These meetings are not intended for application reviews. If you would like to have your application reviewed before you apply, please contact the Project Lead, Alex Lingnau, at alex.lingnau@calgaryartsdevelopment.com. You can request an application review up to 7 days before the application deadline.

Open office availability:

Thursday, August 8, 2024, between 10am – 4pm. Register here.
Friday, August 23, 2024, between 10am – 4pm. Register here.

These open office sessions will not be recorded.

Additional Information

For Zoom security reasons, we ask that folks register before attending either of these sessions. The Zoom link will be provided upon registration. Registering for these sessions confirms that you agree to our group agreements. Be sure to read the document before signing up.

If you are an artist with specific access needs or require translation or interpretation services, please let us know and we will arrange to make sure you have all the support and information you need to fairly access the application process. This may require booking a one-on-one session with us instead.
